1. Welcome

 

 

Focus of today's meeting is engaging schools.

EMS network report of progress so far is available from ems.network@kirklees.gov.uk We also welcome any ideas or comments you have for improving the network.

The Local Authority Legal Register is now web based.  Further information can be found at http://www.iema.net/ems/lanetwork/lalegislationregister

The EMS network minutes and agendas of meetings can be found on the IEMA website at http://www.iema.net/ems/lanetwork

Please continue to send requests for information to ems.network@kirklees.gov.uk for circulation around the network.  Feedback suggests this is working well.

The EMS National Event will be held at the Royal Opera House, London on 30th September 2009.  Details to follow but please save the date now.  The event will be free to attend and will focus on communication within the organisation.

2. Member Updates

 

 

Craig Wilson (Craven)

EMS is low priority for the council.

The EMS network has been very useful to share best practise and contacts from other councils.

 

 

 

Tim Godson (GOYH)

CLG sustainable operations.

Annual green day / green travel

 

 

 

Mia Hannan (Yorkshire Forward)

Yorkshire Forward has had an EMS since 2002/03 although they are still learning.  They have had a big focus on communications and workshops within the organisation.

 

 

 

Katie Sutton (Kirklees)

First attendance at the EMS meeting today to input into the work Kirklees is doing surrounding sustainable schools.

 

 

 

Emma Bridge and David Rhodes (Rotherham)

Have EMAS in 70% of the council and is attending the EMS meeting today because of the focus on sustainable schools.  Rotherham has EMAS in three schools and plans to add two more in 2009.  Currently working on NI 185.

 

 

 

Tom Shadbolt (YPO)

First attendance at the meeting today.  Looking to implement ISO 14001.  Have completed the IEMA EMS course and is here looking for support.

 

 

 

Jacqui Warren(York)

Decision was made to go for an EMS on 2004, the initial review took place in 2007 but the process has now stalled.

 

 

 

John Clark (LGYH)

Riep funding.

Supporting Tina Penswick and team on sustainable schools.

 

 

 

Martin Beal (Doncaster)

No commitment within the council to have an EMS as yet however they are currently implementing a green travel initiative.

Sees the network as a good information resource.

 

 

Bernd Hoermann (Sheffield)

Currently working on NI188 as part of the climate change strategy team.

 

 

 

Kathryn Marshall (Kirklees)

Working on EMAS at Kirklees council, here today for an update on Sustainable Schools around the region.

 

 

 

Tim Allen (North Lincs)

North Lincs have ISO14001 in part of the council and plan to roll this out to the rest of the council.

 

 

 

Tina Penswick

Attending the EMS meeting today to talk about sustainable schools.

 

 

 

Eleanor Mackilop (Sheffield)

University placement student working on Climate Change at Sheffield council.  First attendance at the EMS meeting.

 

 

 

Jez Tweed (Calderdale)

Currently launching their EMS now.

 

 

 

Jon Andrews (Leeds)

Leeds council have ISO14001 and EMAS throughout the council.  Have just renegotiated their waste contract.

Feels the EMS network is useful for sharing best practise and discussing the national indicator sets.

 

 

 

Gail Hammond (Environment Agency )

The Environment Agency have an Internal EMS with targets set nationally, regionally and office based.  Can assist the EMS network with information on legislation changes.

 

 

 

Jon Bibby (Bradford)

Interested in networking in schools - School forum

Bradford does have EMAS but are considering whether to carry on with external verification.

 

 

 

Brian Rooney, Jeanette Rath (Wakefield)

No corporate commitment for EMS yet however there are pockets of good practise within the council.  There is lots of experience working with schools within Wakefield council.

 

 

 

Adele Wiseman (Kirklees)

Kirklees council are currently working through the first year of the carbon budget and will give an update on how this has worked in Autumn. Kirklees is currently looking at the ISO14064 standard and wanted to make the group aware of a new standard ISO16001 regarding energy management.

Kirklees will be having open days on the 2/3rd June and will be showcasing how they are using the EMAS system to tackle climate change.

 

 

 

Steve Byers (Sheffield)

Does not currently have an EMS but have a lot of the elements of one in place. Will have a low carbon strategy in place by May, this will include a commitment for an EMS.   

 

 

 

James Bridges (Scarborough)

 

 

 

Sackey Benin (DEFRA)

New to the team and EMS having joined in December and was straight into the EMAS revision.  Also works with Sue Whitehead.

DEFRA continue to support the network and the use of an EMS across all sectors.  They are keen to hear of any feedback for the team.  Please contact the ems.network@kirklees.gov.uk for contact details.

Re-visit the schools discussion in six months to check progress.

Invite BSI to next meeting to talk about new standards.

Clarification on use of resources for 3.1 audit commission work.

Invite BRE to talk about their free Site waste management plan online system.
